Transformers are toys that can change dramatically. They are made up of the same parts but their shape and what they can do is very different. The toys were based on a comic book story which was made into a series of films – as technology developed, the stories were changed from graphic art to animation.
Technology has made an impact on all areas of our lives. Last week we thought about families sitting together telling stories about their past and their culture. Film technology means that stories are told to a much wider audience. We can watch films that entertain us, educate us or change what we think about a topic – or maybe all of these at the same time!
Rev Mary’s story in parts tells us about how Jesus’ disciples were affected by meeting him and deciding to follow him. Their lives and thoughts were transformed by his words and actions and they wanted to learn more. Listen to her tell the next part of the story here.
Do people behave differently when they have faith? The Bible tells us about lots of people who were transformed by their faith.Four of them are Rahab, Ruth, Paul and Zacchaeus.
You can find out more about them by following the links on their names.
Look at the story and choose something about each of them from before the transformation. Make it with your playdough.
Think about how they changed and use your playdough to show this.
The hymn, Amazing Grace was written in the 1700s by John Newton. Early in his life he worked on ships that were involved in slavery but, after he became a Christian, he decided to help the people who were working to abolish slavery. He wrote a poem about how he was transformed by his faith and this was later turned into the hymn we have now.
Have a look at the words here.
- Verses 1 and 2 explain how he has changed
- Verses 3 and 4 show how God looks after him in his life
- Verses 5 and 6 describe what he believes will happen after he dies
People adapt and change to their circumstances all the time. Think of all that has changed about the way we live in the past year. Almost everything changed and will change again in the next few months. We will adapt again. Inventors and designers are always looking for things that need to change. They use their imagination to make new things to make life easier or different in some way. There are six very short videos here that show some ideas. Choose the one that interests you or watch all of them!
Our way of being Church has also changed this year and will change again soon. We want to reopen the churches for services as well as thinking about being online still. Could you make a poster for the noticeboards at the churches to explain what we do and to invite people to ‘Come and See’? If you can get it to Rev Yvonne, she can put it up on one of the noticeboards.
An idea for prayer this week:
We celebrate your transforming power in our lives. Inspire us and our communities to change and grow into the best we can be. Thank you for the Lent journey with you as our guide.
A quote about change from Socrates:
‘The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.’
